Who we really are.
This was written by one of our guests and volunteers, Ben, who has put in many hours to get the Julia West House refurbished and refreshed and ready to serve many more people with our special kind of hospitality. This is Ben’s message to our neighbors in downtown Portland.
Many of you have heard of us, know where we are, and say, “Oh that’s the HOMELESS place”.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about who we really are. Welcome to Julia West House. It’s located at 522 SW 13th Avenue in downtown Portland.
While there are many places and services that provide services for the less fortunate, most are government funded and only allow services to those who qualify. We provide a place that is safe, comfortable, out of the weather, a place where any one can just be themselves, have a cup of coffee, a snack, see friends, fellowship with each other, and feel safe. In addition they can take a shower, use computers, receive mail, attend workshops, classes, attend a literacy program, get their GED, all of these services without cost, or the feeling of being obligated. We Have NO Government Funding!!
We are able to operate because of people’s generosity. It costs around 2 dollars a day per guest to provide this hospitality, to give the less fortunate the opportunity to make a connection, to feel normal for part of the day, to see that people do care.
In a typical day at JWH we serve 200-300 guests, provide a dozen showers, check in 60 bags or backpacks, serve gallons and gallons of coffee, snacks, provide tutoring for literacy and GED, and have life-skills workshops. We have volunteers, interns, and students who gladly give their time.
Volunteers answer questions of all kinds and help point guests in the direction they choose to go. We host weekly meetings of Alcohol Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, and Phoenix Rising Transitions. We also have a great relationship with Cascadia Mental Health for our guests who may need additional help.
Having a civil, safe, and supportive place is so important for people who are trying to become stable in their life. We can no longer look at “homeless”, as the street corner drunk down on his luck. Take a good look around; there are hidden homeless all around us. We don’t see them because they do not fit the stereotype.
A lot of people are experiencing the true definition of urban poverty. These are the residents of the metropolitan area that are; elderly, physically or mentally challenged. People who have lost their job or home, children, spouse, many through no fault of their own. some may be in the grip of addiction, and just need a friend, or a kind word, someone to say,”HEY, we are here”, “Come on in, RELAX.” “Anything I can do for you?”
In the Bible, Jesus says, “love each other as I have loved you”. John 13:34. The less fortunate are here to stay, they aren’t going anywhere. They also need to know they are loved and people do care. Positive change does happen!!!
